Aroma & Flavor

Flavor Profile

Earthy • Bitter • Woody • Slightly Astringent

Ashwagandha root has a distinctly earthy, bitter flavor with woody, slightly astringent notes. As a root, it is traditionally prepared in simmered herbal preparations rather than a delicate infusion.

Traditional Herbal Use

Ashwagandha has a long history of use in Ayurvedic herbal traditions, where the root has been incorporated into a variety of traditional preparations.

Modern products containing ashwagandha are often promoted for stress, sleep, athletic performance, and other wellness purposes; however, evidence varies by preparation and intended use. We do not make therapeutic claims for this botanical.

Preparation & Use

Herbal Decoction

Because Ashwagandha is a root, it is traditionally prepared as a decoction.

Basic Decoction:

Add approximately 1–2 teaspoons of dried Ashwagandha Root per 8–12 ounces of water.

  1. Combine the Ashwagandha Root and water in a small saucepan.
  2. Bring to a gentle simmer.
  3. Cover and simmer for approximately 15–20 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and strain.
  5. Allow to cool to a comfortable temperature before drinking.

You can also combine Ashwagandha Root with other botanicals in traditional herbal preparations.

Apothecary Inspiration

Ashwagandha Root brings the deep, earthy character of the root into the apothecary. Its rich botanical presence makes it a fitting companion for slow herbal preparations, seasonal rituals, and intentional moments of connection with traditional plant wisdom.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the package tightly sealed when not in use. For best quality, use clean, dry utensils when handling dried herbs.

Safety

For traditional herbal use. Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Ashwagandha may cause drowsiness or digestive upset in some individuals. There have also been rare reports of liver injury associated with ashwagandha preparations.

Do not use ashwagandha during pregnancy or breastfeeding. People with thyroid or autoimmune conditions, those preparing for surgery, and those taking medications should consult a qualified healthcare professional before using ashwagandha internally. Ashwagandha may interact with certain medications, including thyroid medications, sedatives, immunosuppressants, and some medications for blood pressure or diabetes.
