Spruce resin, also known as pitch, offers a variety of benefits. It effectively treats wounds, including infected wounds, pressure ulcers, and burns, and can help draw out debris from these injuries. Additionally, it addresses skin conditions such as acne, rashes, chapped skin, and eczema. Beyond skincare, the spruce resin helps treat ailments like sunburns, cold sores, athlete’s foot, muscle soreness, and arthritis pain. It also serves as a natural adhesive, which can be applied to close wounds or seal seams in canoes.
Furthermore, spruce resin is beneficial for preserving rawhide, making it waterproof and suitable for creating ropes, snares, and snowshoes. Traditionally, spruce gum is chewed while enjoying walks in the woods. It can also be boiled or chewed to relieve coughs and sore throats, acting as a natural cough remedy. It’s also a fire starter and can be added to candles. Spruce resin is often mixed with oils and beeswax to enhance its absorption.
